At Miann & Co we always design and create with ethics and sustainably in mind. We thought it would be a great idea to give you a run down on the fabrics that we use in our products and generally the types of fabrics you want to be looking out for. We would advise looking for fabrics that have been sourced and produced ethically and without the use of harmful chemicals. Hopefully with this knowledge you are able to shop in future with a little bit more knowledge and understanding of the fabrics used to create the garment.

Not only is their benefits to dressing yourself in cotton but we also think it is very important to dress your little ones in natural products. Babies skin is much more tender and thin than our own and because of this is is more likely to absorb any harsh chemicals within clothing. Due to its delicate nature it is also less resistant to bacteria and harmful substances in the environment especially is it is irritated!

Natural fabrics are not produced in the same was as conventional fabrics, they are not created with the use of harmful chemicals and pesticides. Rather they are produced with much safer methods, which are not only better for us in regards to the end products but also the working conditions for the farmers.

So here are the facts!

Organic cotton means that the cotton crop is harvested without the use of any toxic pesticides, synthetic fertilisers or genetically modified seeds. GOTS- certified organic cotton means that this process has been traced from start to finish to ensure that the product is 100% natural organic cotton. Natural organic cotton is also softer, sturdier and more durable than conventional cotton.

As there are no chemicals being used in the production process of natural cotton it in turn means that the working conditions for the individuals harvesting the cotton is improved. Removing the possibility of breathing in toxic chemicals improves their quality of life.

Natural cotton is also much more gentle on your skin and your little ones skin! Babies skin is much thinner and more porous therefore it is much more sensitive and less resistant to bacteria. By selecting an organic natural cotton product you are ensuring that there is no toxic chemicals being exposed to the skin via the clothing.

Linen is a natural fiber made from a flax plant. This wonderful plant has been used for centuries due to its incredible properties. Silk is collected and spun from threads that make up the inner cocoon of a silkworm. These raw silk threads are then harvested and reeled together for commercial use. Silk is a natural fiber that has been produced for thousands of years, it is completely biodegradable and has a low environmental impact. Silk will also last many years if you take care of it. Another wonderful benefit of silk products is that due to the composition of long, smooth, tightly woven natural fibers silk assists in helping decrease skin's loss of moisture and is great for people with sensitive skin.
